Five days of waking up at 6am, leaving the house at 7am from Osborne Park, riding to Lake Monger for a 3.2km walk and finally riding to work based in Balcatta and back to my house in Osborne Park. Why do I do it? One simple answer, I love riding my bike. I brought a mountain bike (Trek 3700) before Christmas last year. I've been riding for about four months now and so far, I must say that it's one of the best life decisions I've made.
It's funny how the way life turns out because I'm about to tell you how one simple decision made me, loose weight, save heaps of cash, get free parking, reduce chances of diabetes, increase my fitness level dramatically, have much more energy throughout the day and of course inspire the ones around me to make that same decision. I gained the benefits of cycling everyday by this number: $1.20 per litre. Thats right, petrol prices. I think we all know the pain of petrol prices. I for one definately felt the pain, the pain was so great that it forced me to think a different way to somehow reduce cash I pay for petrol.
So I decided, it would be a smart idea to buy a new bike and ride to work. After all, if you think about it, the money you pay for a bike, you pay it off fast with all the money you save from petrol, so it really works out at the end. Four months later.... I no longer ride for the sake of saving money. I ride because I have noticed there are far more better reasons to ride.
I've gained alot of memories riding through the streets of Perth, all those hazzelnut cafe lattes at those cafe strips after an awesome ride, those challenging rides to Fremantle, following the "Armadale to Perth" bike maps, riding along the sunny coast of Hillarys to Scarborough and of course those weekend riding trips with my girlfriend. I now ride because I love riding my bike. It's simply a great means of transportation because when you ride, you can take shortcuts to your destination and not wait at the lights, you don't need to worry about parking anymore because you can park right at the doorstep of many places.. and also pay nothing. When you're riding, you're free as a bird!
